not what I was expecting from the title! Note how the cowboy, rugged individualistic hero of this holocaust, is a landless, itinerant, deracinated labourer with no collective bargaining power, threatened right from his beginning with obsolescence via railroads and later highways.
Seriously, who would be a cowboy? At least his seagoing predecessor could steal the ship and use it for actual (short-lived) independence.
